Consent
Full Title: "Consent"
April 25, 1995
12:00PM - 5:00PM / the performance did last the full 5
hours
Alfred University
Elements: The Cube, Lights, Rope, Hood, Nude Model (Male), a Single Assistant
Consent was the third performance involving "the Cube".
A room with only one door, no widows and directly across the hall from
the Administration Offices was acquired for this performance. The Cube
was erected and lighting arranged earlier in the day. In the closed room
the artist was disrobed, hooded and suspended within the frame. All the
assistants left the room.
Outside the room the assistants, under instructions, were to allow one
viewer in the room at a time. Before anyone could enter they had to read
a form describing what they were about to see and that by entering they
gave their consent.
The event was scheduled for 5 hours, however due to extreme pain and duress
the performance was cut short.
Notes and observations:
- As a result of only one person being allowed in the room at a time a large lined formed in the hallway, itself causing inquiry by others as to what was going on.
- There was a meeting in the Administration's Office at the time of performance. It was later conveyed that a portion of that meeting was devoted to a discussion of the work going on across the hall from them.
- Several administration and faculty personnel attended the performance in response to the discussions.
- Post performance the artist was questioned by several faculty members. Some faculty members found the work offensive and inappropriate, while others took to the defense of the artist and work.
